Who is The Phantom? Everything You Need to Know
Share
Ask any Indian comic reader above the age of 35 about The Phantom and watch their face light up. The Ghost Who Walks is one of the most enduring characters in comic book history — and in India, he holds a special place that few Western characters can claim. But who exactly is The Phantom, and why does he still matter? This is everything you need to know.
The origin story
The Phantom was created by American cartoonist Lee Falk in 1936 — making him one of the oldest costumed superheroes in comic history, predating both Superman and Batman. The story begins in the 16th century when a British sailor named Christopher Walker witnesses his father's murder by Bengali pirates. Stranded on the shore of the fictional African nation of Bengalla, he swears on his father's skull to dedicate his life and the lives of his descendants to the destruction of piracy, greed, and cruelty.
That oath has been passed down through 21 generations of the Walker family. Each son takes up the mantle when his father falls — wearing the same purple suit, the same mask, and carrying the same twin .45 pistols. To the outside world, it appears the same man has lived for over 400 years. This is the legend of The Ghost Who Walks.
The Ghost Who Walks — explained
The Phantom's nickname — The Ghost Who Walks — comes from his reputation for immortality. Because the identity is passed from father to son in secret, the local tribes and criminal underworld believe the same Phantom has been fighting evil for centuries. He cannot be killed. He cannot be bribed. He does not age.
This mythology is central to what makes The Phantom compelling. He is not a superhero with powers — he has no ability to fly, no laser vision, no magical strength. He is just a man, exceptionally well-trained, deeply committed, and supported by the loyal Bandar pygmy tribe who guard his secret. What makes him powerful is the legend itself.
The Phantom operates from the Skull Cave in the Deep Woods of Bengalla, aided by his horse Hero, his wolf Devil, and his partner Diana Palmer. He wears a mask that leaves no eye whites visible — a design choice that makes him appear genuinely inhuman and is said to strike fear into anyone who faces him.
Why The Phantom became such a phenomenon in India
The Phantom arrived in India through Indrajal Comics in the 1960s — a publication by Bennett, Coleman & Company that brought Lee Falk's characters to Indian readers at an affordable price. For decades, Indrajal Comics were a staple of Indian childhood. Phantom and Mandrake comics were sold at railway stations, borrowed between friends, and collected with the same dedication that kids today give to trading cards.
The connection between India and The Phantom runs deeper than distribution. The character's base in Bengalla — a fictional African nation with heavy South Asian influences — and the references to Bengali pirates in his origin story gave Indian readers a sense of cultural proximity that Western readers simply didn't have. The Phantom felt, in some intangible way, like he belonged to us.
That nostalgia is very much alive. A huge number of Indian comic collectors are specifically hunting Phantom issues, and the character's revival through new publishers like Comic Bazooka has introduced him to a new generation of readers.
The best Phantom comics to start with
Each Phantom issue is self-contained, so you can start anywhere. That said, some issues are better introductions to the character than others. Here are our recommendations from the Comic Bazooka Phantom collection:
- The Phantom: The Lion — A great standalone adventure that captures the character's jungle setting and moral code perfectly. Ideal as a first issue.
- The Curse of Old Man Mozz — A fan favourite with a strong mystery element. Shows the Phantom's detective side as much as his action side.
- The Return of General Bababu — One of the most action-packed issues in the range. Great for readers who want a fast-paced adventure from page one.
- The Phantom Box Set (10 issues) — The best value option. Ten complete stories covering a wide range of the character's adventures. Perfect if you want to dive in deep from the start.
